Biomet, the makers of the “SternaLock” Microfixation Plates asked cardiac surgeon Dr. Daniel M. Bethencourt to speak to the physicians at Kaiser Sunset in Los Angeles California on March 17th, 2015 . His presentation called “My Experience with Plate Fixation in the Chest – Enhancing Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bone Healing” explained Dr. Bethencourt’s use and benefits of using SternaLock plates on patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Bethencourt specializes in robotic and minimally invasive heart surgery and has used the SternaLock plates routinely for his patients who have heart surgery using minimally invasive techniques (non-robotic). Dr. Bethencourt also utilizes the use of SternaLock plates to close the sternum on complex cases where robotic and minimally invasive techniques cannot be used. As a result patients who have had the plates internally fixated to closed the bone that was cut to access the chest have had virtually no complications of “non-union” of the sternum or ribs, which is a complication that can result from having heart surgery.
